Life and Afterlife Coaching: “Is the Wit Worth the Wait?”

Would you rather wait for someone who makes you laugh, or settle for a dullard? A  compatible sense of humour can be such a compelling and enticing aspect of romance that it might be worth the wait, as we discussed with tonight’s guest, comedian Mike Muratore. He reminded us that life (and our dating life) is more enjoyable when we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

Mike also talked about dating in America where it can seem more formal and structured than in some cultures abroad where there are more tightly-knit communities that participate in group activities which naturally foster romantic connections by allowing us to engage in our most natural behaviour without social pretensions or the pressure of “succeeding” at getting an additional date. However, he believes it’s possible to find similar communities in the U.S. if you get involved in a group activity about once a week where the gender of your choice is a participant. What do you love to do? Sign up for a drawing class, go on meetup.com and find some hiking groups, join a meditation group, or audition for a play. By the way, it is worth mentioning that theatre productions are notorious for nurturing friendships and affairs backstage, perhaps because being connected as characters gives us permission to be more emotionally intimate at a quicker pace than we might do in the real world. Try auditioning for a comedy play if that’s your interest. At least you’ll have a laugh even if you don’t meet the partner of your life…although who knows? Maybe that person will be in the audience, like Mike’s fans that he often ends up dating. However, watch for the allure of the illusion: when you meet someone who knows you first as a character, it’s inevitable that there may be some unrealistic expectations. Yet nothing’s impossible, and brilliant banter has the power to transcend cultural, social, and economic barriers. Humour can sometimes be the most effective way to express genuine feelings, and honest communication is a major key to love.
